ABOUT the History of the Club
The Sydney Maritime Modellers Club was founded by John Bartram, Allan Wright and Frank O'Gallagher in June 1998 as the Norwest Maritime Modellers Club and during this time it sailed a mixture of sailing vessels and electric powered vessels. The lake was first used by the Sydney Remote Control Yacht Club. Don Turner was known to practice sail at Norwest and we are still seeking more history. The Norwest Maritime Modellers Club gained permission to use Norwest Business Park Lake and membership started to grow. The lake was shared occasionally with the Sydney Remote Control Yacht Club when their regular sailing site at Bicentennial Park was unavailable. During early 1999 the Sydney Remote Control Yacht Club suggested that we join forces as one club. The Norwest Maritime Modellers Club became the Sydney Maritime Modellers Club a division of the Sydney Remote Control Yacht Club. This enabled all members to take advantage of a number of different RC Yachting activities and also ensured that all members were covered by 3rd party insurance as they are today.
On August, 2001 the Sydney Maritime Modellers Club became in incorporated entity unto itself. The club voted in its own committee members and become a registered club within the New South Wales Radio Yachting Association.
The Club exists as an entry level and racing club for Radio Controlled and Model Yachting and provides Handicap Racing for any class of sailing yacht and Scratch Racing for International One Meter (IOM) and Soling One Meter (S1M) class yachts. Skippers wishing to build their own boats are also given guidance and assistance. Social sailing is also available in between race days. Skippers also participate in Interclub, State, National and International Level Regattas.
The club has an elected President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Race Secretary, Class Coordinators and Committee Members. The Sydney Maritime Modellers Club is an incorporated entity registered with the Department of Fair Trading. The club is also a member of the New South Wales Radio Yachting Association.
In 2016 the Club became a Not for Profit Organisation and launched the DF65 Class Racing and now DF95 racing.
In 2020 and 2021 and at the start of 2022 repeated Covid 19 outbreaks impacted racing shortening these seasons.
